Penned By Western

About us:
For too long, students at Western University have been unable to find a creative writing club. That’s why the Spoken Word Society was founded in 2019 to be a place for students to bond over the power of creation and language. In 2021, we decided to change the club name to Penned by Western to better reflect the varied interests of our members and the many types of creative writing out there. We want all writers to feel welcome and to find a space here.

We’re excited to create, share, and discover writing penned by Western students! We host workshops, designed not only to help you learn more about the craft of writing, but also to start writing and receive feedback! Evenings usually feature a short presentation and a few writing prompts. Then, we give you time to write with the opportunity to share your work at the end and receive friendly feedback. Starting in 2025, we have begun hosting creative writing events (such as love letter writing for Valentines’ Day or Mother’s Day Card Making) alongside writing workshops. The relaxing and encouraging atmosphere of these nights is nothing short of magic, so keep an eye out for our next one to join in. At the end of every year, our members collaborate together to publish a chapbook of prose and poetry to share with family, friends, and Western as a whole. We celebrate the achievements of our members with an annual chapbook launch party filled with food, drinks, and an open mic!

Spoken word lends itself to sharing, so we won’t forget our roots. We’re excited to welcome all members of Western’s creative community!
